I keep seeing post about barbed wire. So I was wondering what kind of fencing does everybody have? I have slick wire a/k/a barbless wire.

I can't wait to hear what people say!! My boarding stable has scary ass fencing. There is a mix of barbed wire, slick thin wire and board fencing with the
thinnest, weakest looking boards and most of the boards were installed on the outside of the posts so the horses could just lean on them and pop them right
off. My horse is in the stud pen with solid wood fencing and electric wire on the top board. He is safe but the fencing in the rest of the place scares me to
death.
I am trying to get them to fix the fencing and am looking for low cost alternatives. I was wondering how it would work to have electric rope fence with hot wire on top and the rope not electified. My reason for this is cost and I figure the hot wire will keep them off the rope. The hot wire is already in place so we would just have to replace the slick wire with braided rope. Anyone have thoughts on this? My former barn was all wood fencing and the horses ate it like termites. The barn before that was a mix of wire, chain link and wood.

Well I board, so it's kinda different for me.
During the summer, I'm at a barn where it's basically wood fencing, no wire or electricity. Just wood posts and 3 wood boards. During the school year, 1/4 of her paddock is pipe corral panels (they're replacing this with something permanent sometime in the future, they're kinda redesigning the paddock layouts right now), about 1/2 is wood posts with 4 hot wires/cables, and 1/4 of it is solid wood fencing with boards. Kind of a mix, but ALL safe, all well-kept, and looks nice too. |

The boarding barn that I volunteer at has "creative" fencing. The place was built in 1940, and originally had all wood fencing. The current owners
bought it a year ago and it was heavily in dept, so they are digging out of that and spending money on the horses first. The fencing, it's scary. at odd
angles and propped up with more wood, or they loop some rope back and forth over the latest bit the horses have pushed over. There are some closet doors
serving as replacement fencing as well.
They tell me "oh yeah it's going to get replaced next week," but I've been there over a month, heh. Hopefully it does get replaced soon. They do get pretty creative with what they have though. |

Mainly three rail wood fencing with hot wire on the top and in the middle. A couple of areas we have the meshed "horse fencing" or just hot tape to seperate a pasture. Here's a decent pic of the wood fencing
And a pic of the mesh fencing, you can see more of the wood fencing here too.

I have Farm Fence with a hot wire on top for the regular size horses. For the minis and ponies, I have the same with an additional hot wire mid way down the
fence so they little guys don't scratch thier butts on the Farm Fence and bend it all of shape! LOL

We spent the money to do it up right as soon as we bought our new place. We have 6 foot high 4 board vinyl fences. We then put a hot wire on the inside of the
fence about 6 inches from the vinyl and another hot wire on the top. The hotwire on the inside was a live and learn kind of thing - no matter how well
something is anchored, when 2100 pounds of percheron butt has an itch, it's coming down.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but what do you guys think of your mesh fencing? Is it pretty durable? Pros and cons?

The barn where my horse is boarded has all wood fences, usually about 4-5 feet high with 3 or 4 boards.
One field had like meshed wire or whatever, but it got taken out and is getting leveled to be a new riding ring, so it'll have board fencing too and might get horses turned out in it. |

I have a mix here. I have wood, electric and barbed wire and panel gates. Until I make a hell of a lot more money, the fence will be that way for another year.

DivaD wrote: I think you can see in my picture that it is buckled in a few places, the horses tend to lean on/over it but probably could be completely prevented with a hot wire on the top. The other thing for us is that we live in a flood plain and when we did flood all the debris got stuck on it and bent the fence completely over. All our wood fencing was fine. |

Oh yeah, and we've got 5 strands of hi-tensile fencing. The top, middle, and bottom strands are hot to keep the horses from leaning over it or sticking
their heads through. Our neighbors have a fenceline that our horses share with hers (because she bought the property from us and just split the field), and
they have wood boards across the top of mesh fencing...I don't particularly like the mesh because her horse has gotten a foot stuck in it once, almost
causing her to lose the hoof, and the mare we are keeping here for my trainer has also gotten a foot stuck in it. We have put a line of hot tape across it on
our side to deter our horses from getting too close, and so far it's helped.
I like the hotwire because they usually touch it once and don't go near it again. The way to a man's heart is through his stomach.....but the way to a woman's heart is through her horse!
