If your gut feeling is to let a professional handle the horse, then you should.  You could get hurt and it sure cant hurt the horse to be taken to one.

I have a good friend (college age/fearless/great rider) that was working with a disrespectful mare recently.  She felt the mare was coming along, and she was, but after a month of good behavior, she unloaded  her one day and instead of loping off (like most horses), the mare came back and kicked the crap out of her.  She has to have surgery to reconstruct her jaw and had she not had layers of clothing on due to the cold, she would be dead because the mare kicked her chest so hard it bruised her heart.

Kicking due to disrespect is a tough battle.

Expect more from your horse, and you will get it

When I ride my horse I get to forget I have a brain injury

I was the daughter who wouldn't lift a finger in the house but cycled madly off in the pouring rain to spend all morning mucking out a stable.
