Exactly, you raised your babies so they know better. However, a new horse is gonna try and see what it can get away with. When putting a horse into a new heard situation squabbles often break out, they kick/bite to establish dominance. Therefore, I see nothing wrong with me smacking one on the ass to let it know I'm the boss. It's certainly not cuddly, it's the way they communicate. They don't use ropes, lol.
