What is this horse's body language when he kicks...

Ears flat back?
Ears forward?
Ear's cocked toward you and waiting on what your response is?

Lips tight? Or loose?

Hunches gathered under himself and tail taut to his rump?
Or loose tail and just piston firing?

From what I gathered.. he tends to only do this from the one side..
Does he try to catch sight of you with the opposite eye when he decides to be an ass?
Is this his stiff side?

Best way to long-term correct a behavior is to be able to make a decision on what is causing the behavior.

If he's just being a "shithead" on his stiff side.. then you have to:
a)Make that a bad idea
b)Supple that side up before even worring about lunging on that side.

If it's a matter of his stiff side and being uncomfortable and confused..
a)Work on getting him suppled up on that side
b)Work on "explaining" what you want better
c)Make it a bad idea to be a shithead

If he's got a tight lip, ears flat back, tail pressed to his hunches, and he's hunching underneath himself to live-fire at you..
a)Your horse either has mental or pain issues on that side
b)You still have clarify to him that is an unacceptable way to announce his issues
c)Figure out what the hell the problem is.. etc.

...so on and so forth

If a horse is just being a shithead, it's not a bad idea, ever, to make that a bad idea for him to consider. (Mind you, I'm not advocating just going out and beating on your horse with a baseball bat .)
Remember, you're a fraction of his weight, not as fast, and you lack big teeth and hard feet.... all in all.. he could really fuck up your day.
