In order to compete at AKC-sanctioned shows in obedience, agility, rally, etc. the dog needs to be papered or have an ILP number. AKC is now starting a program for mixed breeds and unregistereds, too (due to obvious abuses with the ILP system), for the 'companion' events. I don't know much about it yet, but the AKC site has info on it, or you can call them and ask.

You'll have to see the papers to verify if she can be registered. If they're not filled out correctly by the old owners, they won't register her. I don't THINK there's a limit on the age of the dog to be registered (I'd think AKC is too money-hungry to turn down a registration) but I could be wrong.
