You could also ask around in the neighbourhood about selenium levels in the soil. If there are beef or dairy farms around they may have already done testing to find levels.

If you're serious about learning equine nutrition and how to balance a diet these are some good books.

I would start with Beyond the Hay Days by Rex Ewing. He presents all the information in an extremely easy to understand and well broken down format. Great primer that I personally think every horse owner should read. It's also written in an entertaining style instead of being dry science.

Elanor Kellon also has an excellent book called Equine supplements and nutriceuticals. I refer to it often.

The Holistic Horse has good info too and Pat Coleby's book Natural Horse Care is EXCELLENT even if it is more specific to Australia, the basis of nutrition remains the same.
