I am with Lisa. BMX, oncologists have suspected (due to studies and clinical observations) that this is a trait that is passed down on the mother's side. And while it is 50% likelihood that you have the gene, the gene does NOT mean that you will automatically develop cancer. Go to the bracanalysis.com site and see the actual statistics on their trials. I only know because my cousin A has had breast cancer 3 times now, except for it has now spread. All of her children have been tested. She will probably die in the next year or so if the experimental trial she is on now does not work.

I am getting mamos at 35 because of a recommendation by my doctor. She is adamant about early screening. My mother did it this way and, thankfully has been okay. My mother has also had routine ultrasounds on her ovaries/uterus because ovarian cancer (another BRCA gene thing) also runs in the family. They found polyps in her uterus and she was put on medication to shrink them last year, which they responded to. The worry was that they could become something suspicious, so they wanted to get rid of them. While there is not yet a "proven" or "regular screening technique" for ovarian cancer, my doctor recommends yearly ultrasounds.
