AppyButt makes a good point about the vet.

You need to, often, already have a relationship with the vet BEFORE you call them in the middle of the night to come help you. Some vets will NOT come out if you haven't already set something up with them. I'm lucky that my horse is at a barn that already has a great vet and a good relationship with her but if we moved, I'd have to set up something else with someone new (mostly because if I moved him it would be closer to my house which would likely put us out of range for this particular vet).
Establish ties with the vet as soon as possible! Even if it's just for something mundane like shots, get your name on the client list before you NEED the vet RIGHT NOW. Also, make note of the nearest vet hospital and arrange some way of getting the horse there if need be. Again, do this before you need to use it.

One exception to this is when the entire boarding barn "has" a certain vet or vet clinic. All boarders are automatically clients and the barn owner or manager is the main name on the client list. I've been at several barns like this, and it's not necessary to know the vet because the barn you are at is the client instead of the individual horse owners.
