You are right, big and bulky when fitted for halter. When they are not fitted on though they can be close to average size and I mean that in the respect that most are huge. BTW, a bulky halter horse will still be bulky(muscles) even if you pull the additional weight off them. And how they are put together(conformation) determines how they will travel. HnH herself said, the way this mare was put together & her break at the elbow, made her travel roughly...(just saying)...
