Donkeys are smart, but stubborn critters- kind of like toddlers. If they don't want to do something, they will shut their brain off and go into their own little world. It takes a lot of persistence to convince a donkey that you know what's right for them and eventually consistent work pays off. You might have to lead him around with butt rope for a while or walk him in a zig zag pattern until he learns that no matter what you are going to get him to go where you want him to.

I had to walk in a zig zag pattern with Elvis for a few days in order to get him halter broke. If Chester refuses to move, pull him to the side. Most donkeys are really only good at rooting themselves when you ask for forward or backwards motion and will be forced off balance if you pull them to the side. Just keep making him zig zag until he gets that no matter what, he is going to have to move. Good thing with donkeys is that they get easily bored and most get tired of the zig zag game pretty fast.
