I wouldnt jump in to euthanizeing her.

What were your goals when you got her? Since you knew she was a project, you knew things may not turn out as expected. I think we all dream of a Cinderella story, but we dont always get one, but that does not mean the horse is doomed.

One example of that on this board is when Wheatherhorses got her grey horse, Kip. The seller was dishonest, she got taken, he was hard to handle, unsafe, etc., but she found a job that suited him, and now he is an amazing endurance animal. Many people would have deemed him crazy and sold him, or put him down.

Per your post, the veterinarian is not diagnosing this mare as permanently lame, nor in such bad health she cannot be brought back. It is going to cost some money, but keep trying with her. Get her teeth worked on, get someone to work with her (unless you feel you can get her broke), and see what happens in the next year. If she isnt good to go in a year, cut your losses. That is just a chance you take when you get a project like this.

Are there other posts about this mare? I couldnt find any. Does she have a good mind, good feet, good conformation? What is her history?

Expect more from your horse, and you will get it

When I ride my horse I get to forget I have a brain injury

I was the daughter who wouldn't lift a finger in the house but cycled madly off in the pouring rain to spend all morning mucking out a stable.
