They love to dig. Love it. She might have been laying eggs, but most likely she was just making herself a burrow to lay in to keep cool.  My tort is just a little cuss, ~5 inches long and 400g, but he tries and tries to tunnel out of his outside enclosure.  

On the topic of awesome zoos that do it right, the San Diego Wild Animal Park is simply amazing.  If you ever get the chance, go on the early morning photo safari-style tour.  It's absolutely mind-blowing.
