I can allow her to trot into the canter, and I will only be doing this after her gait is established, so trotting into the canter will not be a detriment to our progress. =) That sounds very helpful and I will definately try that, she's surefooted and has been over poles before- not an elegant jumper (okay, she doesn't jump at all, lol), but she tries. Given how she reacts to a 6 inch high pole, I think starting from ground level and then slowly moving it up until she decides to canter would work better, and then doing the lowering method you mentioned.
