I think it really just depends on what you want to do.

I am boarding my horse now and I like the place I'm at. I have her in an individual run (because of her weight issues; otherwise she'd be out with the herd), she gets the feed I choose, and I have access to an indoor, an outdoor and trails. Plus, it's easy to schedule in a lesson and not have to haul a horse in to ride, and since Lilidh has been out of commission I've been able to ride other horses.

The downside for me is the cost and the lack of control - I grew up with horses at home and I'm used to making decisions on every detail. However, I love the place I'm at and I've had no issues with the care, and it's definitely nice to have other horse people to chat with and get ideas from and hang out with. The last place I was at the other boarders and I were on different schedules for riding, so I was always there alone, and it was pasture only board, which would never have worked for Lilidh but worked great for Junior, who is an air fern.

Personally, I enjoy having access to an indoor, especially during the winter...I think even if I had my own place in this area, I'd be tempted to board during the crappy winter months so I'd be able to continue riding (when I had horses at home, I was in an area with no boarding and no indoor arenas, so it was never even an option).

How terribly sad for you that the extensive advice you've been given wasn't what you wanted and wasn't sufficient for you to figure what to do.

Sometimes I wonder if there is an asshat of the year award you may be competing for that we don't know about.
