If I had horses (alas, I have none. So far) they would be home with me because I live on a farm with nice pastures. We have had milk cows and I was gladly a slave to milking twice a day.

If we wanted to go on vacation, we hired a responsible teenage neighbor or two from church, gave them explicit printed instructions, and paid them well to milk the cow and feed and water everything (plus they got the milk). I knew their parents were looking over their shoulders so that was extra insurance, and in 6 years we never had a problem.

In the future, my hope is new horse fencing and a couple of riding horses to spoil, and will lean on locals for vacation help. If I'm already paying a lot to feed, vet, deworm and keep feet good, paying a teen well for a week is just a drop in the bucket. And meanwhile, looking out the door and seeing sleek horses grazing would lower my blood pressure many points.
