My dogs always wear collars with ID tags. I don't let them run, but in the past both have managed to either slip out the door or break out of the yard and run off. One found his way back to me (twice!) because a kind stranger caught him and called the number on the tag.

Both dogs also seem to feel uncomfortable without their collars. After his last bath, Caleb actually shoved his head into his collar and got all excited because it was back on him.
My two tractor/truck/hay chopper chasers are afraid to leave the yard, lol.  They only go out the gate when told to otherwise we can leave the gate wide open and they will just stand there. The puppies are afraid of the big noisy machines that are outside the fence.
