On clearing mucus from airways, there is an expectorant powder you can buy if you can't find the cough syrup.  I don't know the name of it off-hand, but your vet would know.  It is an expectorant powder, and my vet sells it right in his office.  It's not expensive, and I think you just put the powder on the feed.  If they won't eat it, you can probably mix a little water into a mash, and syringe it in.  It's been a while since I've had to use it.  But the methol cough syrup and expectorant powder might help.


ETA:  I was looking for the specific powder and cough syrup we use, and ran into this information.  I haven't used this products, but might try them on my mare.
