My dogs wear collars when out of the house/ fenced yard. I don't leave them on inside; I've seen dogs break jaws when caught on another's collar or strangle when caught on a crate. When the weather gets severe, the collars go on before we head for the basement just in case.

Collars have phone and cell phone numbers, and "If loose I'm Lost" on one side, and "I need daily meds!" on the other. The med part isn't true, but people are far less likely to keep a dog they find if they think it needs costly meds. I don't have the dog's name on the collar - I don't want someone who finds them to know it; I want them to call me so I can get my dog back!  Rabies tags are on the collars as dogs can be shot on site in many areas if seen 'at large' without the tag.

Two are microchipped, but most places here don't check, so that's essentially done only for OFA purposes or if they would happen to get loose at a show or out of town event.
