Today's work with kalli. After catching her from the paddock I decided to do a little tyre work with her. Just to help her develop her training a little in relation to walking where she is asked. This should help with the float loading. She was a good girl. Sorry the photos are a bit crappy. it is a little hard to take them yourself. Also they are on my phone. I had decided last night that I will introduce her to the running reins today. I can only keep her at school for a week, so I need to utilise the time I have there. Since breaking her in she has still not had any contact on her mouth, only during downward transitions and rein backs. I use the reining reins to introduce the concept of having a contact whilst going forward, it also helps teach them to give at the pole. I had them on for about 5 minutes, just to have a little walk and trot. She was a good girl. Lots of pats and soft words. Here are some photos of her figuring them out. After a little break and a snack for being a good girl . I did a little ground work for the leg yield. For this I hold the cheek strap of the bridle. With enough force to stop the horse going forward, and to get a little flexion. I then apply enough pressure behind the girth area to get the horse to cross over with it's back legs. The second it does I let go of the bridle remove pressure at pat. She was a little confused at first. She mostly wanted to go backwards. But she figured it out quickly. I did this for about 3-4 minutes as well. I then put the saddle on, lunged her a little. Asked for a little canter. Then hoped on for a ride. She was a little bit snorty today. Not sure why. Whilst riding I just worked on walk -trot -halt transitions a little rein back and a couple of circles. She is still in the habit of wanting to stop when turning. but that is OK she just needs some miles on the clock. Overall a great day.
