We're actually starting a manure pile, to compost some for the veggie garden we're putting in this fall. Otherwise, the pastures get harrowed at least monthly, and the stuff I pick up from the small pens and the rare times that horses are stalled gets spread directly on the grassy 'yard' area we use for riding. Have a Newer Spreader for that job, and highly recommend them for small operations--easier to handle (I can hand pull it even full) and it crumbles the manure as it spreads. I give a load now and then to a neighbor who is an avid gardener, otherwise prefer to recycle the nitrogen right here. Our soil is sandy and has very low organic matter, so the more I can add, the less I have to spend on fertilizer and hay.
