You don't need a horse who excels at jumping to be able to do this, just a horse who is reasonably co-ordinated enough to get himself over a jump safely if he's asked. You can find individuals in pretty much any breed who is capable of handling the kind of "jumping" the OP's friend is interested in doing.
Agreed. I've seen plenty of TWHs and other gaited breeds pop over a log or two out on the trail. Was it pretty? Usually not. Would I ever buy one specifically to jump? No. Did they know how to do it/where their feet were? Yes. Most people who want to pop over a tiny crossrail or a log typically don't take lots of lessons, don't want to find a jumping trainer, or even want to jump more than once or twice a month, if that. It's not that big a deal.
