I thought that in order to register an Appy, that it had to have at either a coat pattern or mottled skin and at least one of the other two characteristics of white sclera or striped hooves. Does the ApHC have different types of registration like the APHA (regular and solid)? I trained a mare that had the striped hooves but no other visable characteristic, until you got her wet. Once she was wet, her mottled shin showed through.

thats only to hardship an appaloosa.....meaning you have no lineage on them- but they are CLEARLY , undeniably appaloosa

Appaloosa is a pedigree based breed, with emphasis on color.

to obtain appaloosa papers, your horse must either have a clear coat pattern, or if they do not show this, scelera, stripped hooves, mottled skin

if they do not have this either, like my weanling gelding , they can be registered- but to show you must pay a Performance Permit , of I believe 250 or 350 . which allows them to compete

there are no seperations of color in appaloosas, as in paint.

if you have a solid appaloosa, with no characteristics, you are only able to cross it on a regular papered appaloosa, to recieve a foal who is eligible for papers.

if you cross colored appy to colored appy, and have a solid- you are still eligible for papers- and to show, you must pay the performance permit.

hope this helped.
