The snap on comp is ONLY for a dog that is 110% mat and tangle free. One little snag and that snap on comb flies off and you ened up shaving your dogs coat off to 1/16" or shorter. You HAVE to use a ten blade with snap on combs. Even pros can screw it up. They just slide on over your blade. image They only work well on certain hair types.

Depending on coat texture of the Shih Tzu sometimes it is more humane to keep the coat short. If you have long hair and get a snarl then YOU KNOW how bad it feels to work it out down your hair. It hurts! If you want that fluffy look the your are going to have to COMB not brush the dog out ONCE or TWICE a day. It comes with the breed.

So do most professional groomers just eyeball it, or do they make sure the dog is tangle free before using it?

Sex is like musical talent. Some guys just naturally have it, some don't. Some can be taught, some want to but will always be tone deaf, and some don't care to be. And some are like a genre of music that you can't stand; you listen because it's on and you can't change the station, but no matter how hard you try you just can't make yourself enjoy it.
