HDR has some decent beginner saddles, as does Exselle. People around here seem to swear by Wintec but I really, really don't find them comfortable at all, and as cowgirl mentioned, they tend to put your leg in a funky place. There is (for the most part) nothing wrong with used leather saddles as people will often sell their saddle when they have a new horse that doesn't fit the old one.

Your local tack shop will usually let you take out a few saddles to try on your horse for fit. If you have a trainer, get them to help you fit the saddle. Practical Horseman also had a pretty decent article about saddle fitting if you need to try and do it on your own: Article
