I did a full semester of co-op (starting in Sept. last year) with standardbreds and never saw them get sent to slaughter. However ALOT got sold as buggy horses to be sold in the US, which in my opinion of worse then slaughter. I'm sure their are some good mennonites out there, but I'm yet to meet one.
I found it was more the trainer. When the trainer said it's time for the horse to go, the owners would take his advice and the trainer would give the person who buys them for buggy horses a call adn set up a time to come get the horse. The owners never cared where the horses were going, as long as they got every last cent from the horse they could.
However I do know there is a kill buyer who buys from the STBD barns in the area as well, I'm sure it's mainly the lame horses that go to him, the rest get sold as buggy horses as they got more money from them that way.

No, I am not trying to make new words. My 'S' doesn't always work.
