We were driving down from the mountains and there was a guy lying face down in a ditch, well we didn't stop because we were scared that it was one of those things where they pretend to be dead you get out, they jump up rob you and kill you! Now we didn't call the police because we didn't want them to think we killed him either,so we drove by him a couple of times then drove off. I kind of felt bad though.
When I was in my early 20s my friend and I were heading to Yuma from California. About midway we saw buzzards just getting ready to land on something. We knew whatever it was was dead because buzzards won't land if the object isn't dead yet. We were brave souls and got out, walked up the sand dune and came upon a body. It was all bloated with the eyes popping out and everything. No cell phones back in the day so we got in the old Ford Falcon and headed towards the nearest law dog. Well we got to a prison first so we talked to the first guard we saw. We weren't even suppose to be there. We told our story and before we even got back in our car they hollared at us to wait. We had to get in their car and take them back to where the body was. Of course we were grilled in the meantime. lol They were nice though. We got back to the spot and they told us to wait inside. After about 15 mins. they came back and made a comment. "Yep, that's him alright". I'll never forget it. He was an escapee that didn't make it too far. 115 degree days with no water doesn't do a body good.

Ah yes, were you just a ways past El Centro then? That's the town I grew up in. The New River passed by town, and the story was that the silt was so thick in it (it's really polluted, or at least it was) that a lot of times when a body was dumped in it, once it sank it didn't come back up, even when the gasses started to build up. I think they tried to rename it "The All-American Canal," even though it came up from Mexico full of crap. Lots of gangs and drugs there in the 80s too. Fun place. Don't stop there.
