Had to laugh...this reminds me of when I was at a swanky barn in CA, I mentioned that I had a black and white pinto pony back in MT that would be an excellent hunter pony, and everyone recoiled in horror. When I asked why, they all said "Oh no, a pinto attracts too much attention in the ring!" Um, isn't that what you want?? (This was after I was told that an unregistered Welch-type gelding without papers, who moved like a frog in a blender, just sold for $30K...he was a plain mud brown with no white.) I guess it's easier to spend megabucks on a plain pony and hope your kid can "hide" on it than to teach the kid to ride. I'm sure that attitude doesn't prevail everywhere though.
