I have three strands also. The lowest is about 18"-24" above the ground and the others are spaced about 15" or so above that. I didn't use a ruler, I used my eyeballs and marked a rake handle that I carried from post to post to nail the insulators.

If you are cross fencing or laying out your pastures in such a way that the gates will be in one area, think about making it so that one gate can do double duty (like if you have a lane between pastures or something. Hard for me to explain this early and with only one cup of coffee in me but you can use the gates to form a chute if you wanted - like from one pasture to another.
