You are not a moron, just inexperienced. The filly came out looking more like her dam than her sire (which is a good thing because dam is cute) and seems to have a pretty head and neck (pictures aren't great to see a whole lot, though). She DID get her sire's croup, though (look at sire and filly and you'll see it).

If what you want is a nice trail horse or 4H type horse, I think you will be just fine with the filly you got, especially if she has a nice personality. Best thing you can do with your filly is to get her a job and make sure she can do it well. A cute, nicely trained horse is about as safe as any horse can be papers or not.
