My guy never stopped stall-walking. He had a stall with an attached "paddock" (12X20 run basically) so he could go in and out, but all he did was pace and destroy his stall. We tried toys, companion animals, close neighbors, and different feeding strategies with his hay and grain. When we moved him to full pasture board he was fine, and preferred to not come in at all, even to eat. However, he was not a very animal-oriented critter- he was boss of the pasture, but preferred to hang out by himself. He was much more interested in people- if there were people around he would double his stall-walking until he was spinning circles and kicking up a ton of bedding and dust. This was a horse who was in solid work (at least five rides a week, usually more), used in lessons and went out on long trails regularly. He was never barn or buddy sour and was happier going out than coming home for trails- he just wanted to be where he could people-watch people constantly.

If your guy is buddy-oriented, maybe a goat or small in-stall companion? Even a chicken- some animals just need the company of other animals more than most.
