Is homophobia associated with homosexual arousal?

Abstract

The authors investigated the role of homosexual arousal in exclusively heterosexual men who admitted negative affect toward homosexual individuals. Participants consisted of a group of homophobic men (n = 35) and a group of nonhomophobic men (n = 29); they were assigned to groups on the basis of their scores on the Index of Homophobia (W. W. Hudson & W. A. Ricketts, 1980). The men were exposed to sexually explicit erotic stimuli consisting of heterosexual, male homosexual, and lesbian videotapes, and changes in penile circumference were monitored. They also completed an Aggression Questionnaire (A. H. Buss & M. Perry, 1992). Both groups exhibited increases in penile circumference to the heterosexual and female homosexual videos. Only the homophobic men showed an increase in penile erection to male homosexual stimuli. The groups did not differ in aggression. Homophobia is apparently associated with homosexual arousal that the homophobic individual is either unaware of or denies.

How do you objectively quantify who is and who isn't "homophobic"? When this guy you have labeled as "homophobic" is sitting behind a one way mirror with twelve undergraduate students with clipboards, stopwatches, and meters - connected to wires that are connected to the base of his penis; he's gonna get a spontaneous and involuntary erection  when looking at gay porn?

Somebody with a very poor understanding of male sexuality is making this up.

Firstly, the men admitted their homophobia.  Secondly, it's hard to argue against a purely biological response.

Study ignores the facts that (1) fear can cause an erection, and (2) the testosterone reaction to a disliked object can cause an erection.

I wouldn't go so far as to say homophobes are secretly homosexual; I would go so far as to say that the EXTREME homophobes MAY be afraid that others will PERCEIVE them as homosexual.

(caps added to emphasize a point, and not because I'm yelling at people)

Not all perceived homophobic behavior is the same - there's as wide a degree in that as there is in any other sort of feeling.  It's why I don't condemn out of hand anyone who says they don't like gays, or anyone who uses the terms "faggot" or "fairy" or the like.  (Plus, I believe they have a First Amendment right to make such statements, and a human right to have such feelings.)  However, if someone is in a position of power and has the ability to damage the rights of another person because the one in power doesn't like that type of person.... then I'll be a harsher judge and, if they're in my state, I will vote against them where possible.  Still, I don't assume all those kind of people are what used to be called "latent homosexuals" - because that simply isn't true.

Take, for example, BRad.  If BRad were to tell you he didn't like gay men.... would you seriously conclude he was a secret gay man?????   Take TRD for another example - he's prone to making more inflammatory statements, and should he make one about gay men, would you seriously conclude he was secretly gay?  Hell, even I wouldn't make that conclusion, and I've been generally happy of late to slam TRD around when I get a chance.  But I don't believe there's any way he's gay.
