A soldier does not need to be a bigot to do his job, and I don't think bigotry is strongly correlated with or the cause of sound military skills. Anyone who thinks soldiers should not be allowed to ever tell a crude joke on break is in a small minority, IMO. What many do want are soldiers who can be reasonably respectful, meaning, would not beat someone to a bloody pulp simply because he is homosexual or what have you. I do not think that is much to ask.
