Yeah, common plecos get huge. I've heard of people in FL catching them and killing them as soon as they hit the bank because they are such an invasive fish. But there are plenty of other kinds that don't - Clown Plecos only get maybe 3.5" long for example. You just have to do your research and determine what kind fits your requirements. Too many people walk into the fish store without doing research and end up buying fish that are completely inappropriate for their tanks - red tail catfish, iridescent sharks, silver arowanas, etc.
