I bred them too:) In general yes, these days paints, appaloosas and QHs can all trace back to a lot of the same lines. HOWEVER, there are horses in both APHA and PtHA who trace back to horses with unknown parentage (ie those original pinto horses--who knows if they were mustang, or spanish horses or what) which is what separates the breeds. Obviously as the article said, APHA is a breed registry which basically means that they go off of bloodlines alone, and so they have to have both a color division and a solid division. Pinto is a color registry, which means most (any breed without any donkey, draft or appaloosa blood or characteristics) horses qualify on color or color characteristics alone (whether it be theirs, or their parent's). As I said, QHs are an approved outcross for all the stock horse breeds, just like TB. So automatically the gene pools gets linked, and of course the breeds have bloodlines in common. It is not true however that every paint or appaloosa could be registered QH if they weren't colored. Paints have unique bloodlines that trace back to tobiano parentage and the tobiano isn't and never has been allowed in the QH world, even when they started allowing APHAs to double register, if your horse went back to anything besides registered AQHA stock (so Grade or Tobiano color showed up anywhere) they were not registerable AQHA. Hence the reason any crop outs (QHs with too much white) are only overos. Sometimes a QH can carry an overo(sabino) gene which will cause a crop-out, but for the most part the difference in APHA/AQHA/ApHC is the genes they carry, and the difference of the bloodlines where they trace back to. The APHA breed technically derives from the fact that color is undesirable in the AQHA, but that there were horses who were colored who needed a place to be registered, and so they created one.
I suppose you can compare it to the different strains of arabians and how they have their separate books (Straight Egyptian, Polish, Russian etc) they all are basically the same, but when you start to really look, the bloodlines trace back to specific places, and their looks and genes are different. So egyptian arabians were bred for pretty and stamina/appaloosas were bred for spots. The polish arabs were bred for their big bone, and versatility and Paints were specifically bred for their color.
I suppose that is the easiest way to describe it.
