My father is a massive genealogy buff. He has had lots of genetic testing. His male line traces back genetically to the Altai mountains in Russia.
He is particularly interested in his male line as it is mostly unknown- his father's father's mother never married and had five illegitimate children over 20 years with no record of a father. Despite some being born in the workhouse they all went on to have respectable careers like clerical workers and teachers.
This unmarried mother's brother was killed by a dead sheep (it fell on him from a cart)! This was such a terrible tragedy for some reason even my grandfather was still upset about it.
My father has found several distant relatives living in the USA.
On my mother's side an ancestor in the 19thC married a black woman who came into port on a boat full of Moroccan leather from Africa (he was a glove manufacturer). We still have her legacy- curly hair, brown eyes, body shape.
There are lots of bits and pieces that probably aren't that interesting to other people but are to me, the suicides, the marriage/birth anomalies, all the different profession from newspaper editors to journeyman tinsmiths.
