Selah, the dog has to walk to heel, sit beside the handler, be steady to the sound of a gun, go out and retrieve, and return, sit in front of the handler, "give" the retrieved object to the handler, and "come behind" and sit. The dog then heels beside the handler until out of the designated area.

It's baby stuff to a true working gundog, but gives some indication that the dog has good instincts. Often used on youngsters before the training for Field Trials. I don't know what they use for the retrieve now, but way back when I was doing it, the dog had to retrieve a dead pigeon. It showed up

whether there was a tendency to hard mouth if the pigeon came back punctured. I had one like that - couldn't get him to relax at all. He came to me as an adult dog, and I was told that his training had been really severe. Beautiful dog, but constantly tense and waiting for punishment. My heart ached for him.
