Not there is a good way to put it. Question for breed people, how did you know when you found your breed?
Now, seeing that I've only ever had one dog, I can't answer this, but I can answer why I picked the breed I did.

Honestly, my first consideration was that I would be living in an apartment for most of this dog's life, so I needed something small for weight regulations as well as I can't imagine something like a Berner getting the zoomies in here. I would duck and cover. It's bad enough with Einstein.

I also knew there were certain personalities that I am just not interested in. I have no interest in a hound or a terrier (though I would some day like to own a rescue pitty). I also planned on doing something with my dog and being pretty good at it, so I needed a dog that would work with me. I also strongly dislike small yippie dogs.

So, I needed a small dog with a good work ethic, so I ended up with a Corgi! I think a lot of it is what you start out with if you really bond well, because now I have a corgi and now I'm in with Corgi people, allowing me to get a "better" corgi next time around that will be a good fit for what I'm looking for - not that Einstein is bad at all. He's a wonder dog!

I will probably have other breeds at some point in time. My husband is set on a Husky or a Beagle. I have no interest in either one of these breeds. My goal is to have a dog who's interested in working with me not away from me! I've seen UD Huskys and Beagles, but the amount of time that must have gone into that? Yikes!
