Not at the barns I've been at.  If something is left out.  Put it the fuck back.  You would want it done for you so why not do it for others?   Be thankful I got it back?  It's sounds like you need a better barn or have had some bad clients/places you board your horse at.  Just because it's left out does not mean it doesn't have an owner.

No shit Beau, it's wrong, I think everyone gets that. And where did I say I'd never return an item to the owner if I saw one misplaced?   I've been the "victim" of a theft of a few items, but would never do that to anyone. Luckily, the two ladies responsible were kicked out of the barn a few years ago and the thefts stopped.  Previous to that it was YEARS ago as a child in a lesson barn catering to kids and teens and some young adults, but I should have taken better care of my stuff, that's my only point.  I totally agree people SHOULD put things back or place it in a safe (such as undercover) and visible place so the rightful owner can recover it easily, but there are a lot of inconsiderate people out there that think things left around are fair game.  Not right, but it is what it is.  Out here, maybe there's just enough inconsiderate people that you run into them more frequently than your area... But it's totally wrong.

I'd rather not blame someone else when I had a hand in mitigating the loss and failed to do so.  I believe there's partial responsibility so I take full responsibility unless I find whoever was responsible and hold them accountable by asking them for the item to be returned.  That doesn't happen often though, I'm still waiting for my longlines to be returned!!!!!!!
