Don't buy light colors and don't get something with kid leather or any or super soft 'feels almost like cashmere' kind of leather because it will not last long. Rubs will show right away as well as scratches and nicks.

I actually quite like Marc Jacobs handbags. I don't treat my things well and I have one that's lasted about 6 years. I throw it in the barn, the floor and it doesn't look completely dead. There is a bit of wear on the plating of the metal parts though.
Not necessarily a bad thing. "Worn" leather always looks classic and cool, and you can avoid this problem if you treat your leather frequently, store your handbag in a dustbag when not in use, and make sure you buy from a company that sells their bags with a warranty.

Also, *shudder* at you throwing a Marc Jacobs bag on the floor/in a barn.
