Ouch. What is the point of the shadow roll thing? I thought those were used to keep horses from seeing directly in front of their feet. Doesn't a jumper need to see directly in front of his feet? Am I mistaken about their use? Please enlighten me.

They're used on horses that have a tendency to hold their heads very high in the air - they have to drop their head in order to see where they're going. Hold your hand over your nose - if you have your head tipped back you can't see a thing, if you drop it down though you can still see just fine.

Hmmm.... so would this be something to use on my horse who has a tendency to evade the bit?  (by the way, thanks for the explanation!)

No, they won't help with bit evasion I'm afraid!  You'll have to do plain old dressage to help with that!

I use one, not for the purpose listed above (although my old trainer thought it would help with that, and it has!), but because I jump in a side pull and I put it on to pad the noseband basically.

And I love how it looks on her.
