I have always been told a brown horse and a bay horse were different, genetically. That bay horses have black points, and browns do not. Ferrando is BROWN and he has NO black. It is dark brown/mahogany color. Am I wrong? (serious question)

I don't know about Ferrando, but you are correct that browns and bays are genetically different. A bay is a black horse with a gene that modifies the black color on the body but not the points, so the body turns brown but mane, tail, legs, and genitalia are still black. Brown is brown... unless it has a cream or dun modifier and then it's even more fun! Or a gray gene that just covers everything else. Whee!
