Because that's how JOCKEYS do it!!! So if you want to go fast you tuck your heels under your hiney and go!! At least, this is how I thought back then. I can remember tucking my heels up and flapping my elbows out to the side and just beating on that poor pony with the end of the reins to get him out of the bone-jarring trot into a lope. I was in TRAINING! When I grew up I was going to ride the next Triple Crown winner to victory! Oh, the daydreams of flying down the track on Man O' War or Seattle Slew, drawing away from the pack, crossing the finish line miles ahead of everyone else. *sigh* sweet memories.
