My family had a dog that had incontinence. She was spayed as a puppy and started developing incontinence when she was FOURTEEN YEARS OLD.

Spay your dog. Be honest though, is it a money issue? Spays aren't generally cheap. With her being loose at a barn, don't be shocked if there is an oops litter sooner rather than later.

That. A female in heat puts off scent for miles, and every unaltered male dog will come looking. Ive seen them climb chain link fences, dig under concrete walls and jump 6 ft to get to a female in heat. One of my neighbors thought they could confine their female in their garage when she was in heat but one day the husband came home from work and in the split second an older neighborhood junk yard ( clever ) dog was inside and tied with her. If your only job is to guard an intact female dog in heat on a close leash, that does not sound like much fun at the barn. I suspect that luck has played a big part in her not getting bred yet.
