To be fair, Maddie hasn't done any digging at the barn since I've made this thread and been much more occupied while there. She has dug on the carpet and her matt a few times though. However, it's super stinking hot lately and when she's dug at the carpet she's flipped it up and then laid down on the cool hardwood and at the barn when she's dug she's also generally laid in the hole so could that also be a temperature thing?

I clipped her in May because she does have a thicker coat and will get hot/pant even in the winter. That helped a bit but her coat is basically grown back excluding the more wirey hair she had so I'm betting she's feeling icky again too.

Thanks to those who are giving me the benefit of the doubt here. I've given my reasonings whether some find them stupid or not (the lazy lout is NOT the only reason, and is based on my experience) is their own choice. I'm doing my best to do good with Maddie from food to enough exercise without making her sore and I've found the barn is the best for that. Heck she's lying at my feet in the office at work right now with the fan directed on her while I am sweating my life away (its cooler here than at home). I am very careful with her and because she's so uncomfortable around certain dogs I've made sure not to put her in those situations anymore.
I am just very firm on the spay situation and yes as Jordie mentioned IF something were to happen my hand would be forced and she would be spayed. I don't entertain myself with the thought of Maddie having a litter. We've both gone through a lot of stress with her hip dysplasia that it is unfair for another dog/owner to have that either. She gets to wander at the barn because there's less risk (than in the city especially) and she is able to stretch her legs, investigate new things but be able to stop/lie down if she starts feeling sore or tired. She even has a kiddie pool at the barn that's filled up for her to play/lie in and cool down if necessary.

I asked about the digging because while she does get a lot of energy she isn't a bouncing off the wall type of dog that you can never slow down. So with the sudden must-dig behaviour it had me worried that it could be something bad/dangerous. While the consensus is nesting behaviour that could be reduced by spaying, it's still a relief that it's not like she has a tumour and is going insane.. or something to that effect.

I did thank everyone for their opinions on this matter and as I said, I AM firm on my view of spaying her, but I do appreciate people taking the time to toss their views in both positive and negative.
While I may not agree with everything said, I do take it in and consider all things for future reference.
