I would think it would depend on what oils are in the hoof oil. So many use petroleum by products which would dry them out. I had been using rainmaker on RC while he was recuperating from the white line and the weather was dry here. It did help but when I ran out, I didn't replace it. When the weather got really dry here and now that he is spending more time in a stall, I went and got the horse shoers secret oil. Mostly because of the ingredients when compared to rain maker now. It's a temporary deal though until I can order some of the Hoof alive. I prefer the oils used in it and want to give it a try.
As far as supplements, I went with smart hoof too and while waiting for his hoof to grow back out, it sure did help!

For those constantly wetting the areas by your water tanks, I heard that years ago and always did it in dry weather. Until recently anyway when I read that the bacteria for thrush thrives in your wet muddy mess and there go your horses walking all in it. So I quit doing it.
