I realized that my ethical compass actually pointed me towards eating locally and in season as much as possible.
This is what I have found. I went through an "OMG killing animals is wrong!" phase and I still believe that a lot of what we do in commercial animal production is wrong. Bad becomes normal and I am NOT okay with that. Animals should be able to live happy and healthy lives. But I want to be happy and healthy too and part of that is consuming foods made by and from happy and healthy animals. Eventually I want to raise my own eggs and dairy, but for now I'm taking advantage of the large local food movement in my area. For a large part of the animal products I consume, I can pick up the phone and call the person who raised/produced it, talk to them directly, and not even have to dial a different area code.
