I had one really bad ride, a so-so ride and a great ride this past week.
Tuesday I rode a 13 year old TB that had been out of work for two years after a bowed tendon. He wiggled everywhere, only understood leg to mean "go faster" (ie, no concept of bending around an inside leg), was extremely stiff in one direction and was constantly escaping through the outside shoulder. He reminded me of a ballerina. He moved his legs a lot but didn't really go anywhere. He wasn't spooky or bad but it was pretty clear that he viewed his rider as background noise. It was a frustrating ride that was just not fun in any way. He was so all over the place that the whole ride was largely unproductive. I don't plan on ever riding that horse again, though he was very handsome for a plain bay.
Wednesday I rode one of my "usuals," an older Arabian gelding that is a total saint. The only problem with him is he is such a quiet mover that he no longer challenges me enough. He's great for working on canter, as I need a quiet horse with a smooth canter for that. But he has so little suspension at the trot that it barely gets you out of the saddle. I can sit his trot without hardly trying at this point.
Thursday I rode a new horse, 14.3h 10 year old Welsh Cob. He's trained to 2nd level and has only been used for a lesson once before. He's a beautiful mover even though he is very stout. You can't imagine how fluid and through this horse can move just looking at him until you actually see him ridden. I felt relaxed on him from the second I got on, which hardly ever happens to me. He's the kind of horse that tests his rider to see how much he can get away with. The first few halts he stopped on a dime with hardly any cue from me, which is an amazing feeling after riding dulled lesson horses. But as the lesson went on I had to be more demanding or he'd just ignore me. He has an amazing trot that has a lot of suspension while still being very smooth. He's very heavy in the bridle and will turn into a bit of a freight train if you don't constantly supple him. But even when he was essentially running away with me I was never afraid because he wasn't being spooky, just naughty. If I really needed to bring him back I could, it was just a lot of work and tiny circles. My instructor was telling me to slow him down and all I could do was laugh at the fuzzy, adorable pony in a horse's body that is trying to run away with me on a 20m trot circle. I was so sad when we were finished as by the last 15 minutes of the lesson I had really figured him out and gotten in my groove. I can't wait to ride him again.
I'm going to take a few more lessons on the cob after Thanksgiving. If all goes well I will be half leasing him for at least December and longer if it takes me awhile to find a new horse to buy.
