I just checked milk prices. The last data I could find for fluid milk was for 2010. The highest price that year was $18.60/hundredweight. The lowest was $14.60. You can't make money milking cows at $14.60 in this economy. IIRC, we saw $14 milk once when we were milking almost 20 years ago. We were thrilled to get $12. A gallon of milk weighs 8 lbs. so there's 12.5 gallons in that hundredweight. The very least of the cost of a gallon of milk in the grocery store went to the guy who got up at 3 a.m. to milk his cows.
