It has been almost 20 years since this happened so I can't remember all the particulars, but a woman at my Arab barn bought an Arab out of a back yard that she was told was registered but they didn't have papers. She later decided she'd be interested in showing so she contacted the registry. She had photos of the horse when he was younger (he was a gray) an approximate age, she knew he came from Michigan and his name was suspected to be based off of his registered name.

Surprisingly enough the registry was able to match the horse up with his papers and she showed with us a few years before she moved out of state.
