What impressed me the most recently about a candidate, was hand-writing a note on nice card stock thanking us for the interview. It definitely stood out from the e-mails and phone calls. I agree, one e-mail - short and sweet is fine, more than that and I find it a bit annoying. I don't "remove points" or whatever for a candidate that doesn't contact me after the interview though. I generally have 7-10 positions open at once, and I'm also taking care of all the other HR aspects of my job, I don't have time to take calls once a week from candidates just to re-iterate what we told them at the end of the interview. At my company though we do get back to all of the candidates that interviewed with us after we have an offer letter accepted from another candidate to let them know that they were not the successful candidate. If we really liked them though and competition for the job was tight, we ask them to keep checking our careers page for positions that interest them because we would like to seem them back again.

We have a position open right now that we have accepted over 250 resumes for, all of them meeting the minimum requirements for the job. I had one girl that phoned me every week to ask where we were in the job search process, and asking "what time can I come in to speak with you about my qualifications, because I feel that I would be a perfect fit for the position". Every single time I told her the same thing, candidates that had been selected for interview would be contacted, however given the number of applicants, those not selected would not be contacted.
